North Alabama Marina Association Discusses Input to Alabama Legislature's Water Management Policy

FLORENCE HARBOR, FLORENCE, AL  Marina owners and operators in North Alabama want a say in current water management policy being developed by legislators.  They are collecting economic impact information for their region to make a presentation to the Recreation Sub-Committee for Alabama Legislative Committee on Water Management.  That policy is to be presented to the Legislature in February 2009.

Also attending the meeting was Edwin Johnston, AL Dept. of Environmental Management's coordinator for waterway grants.  Ditto Landing was awarded $500,000 in U.S. Fish and Wildlife grants earlier this year.  Florence Harbor is among several Alabama marinas that have applied for grants this year.  The grants specifically benefit waterway tourism and will help accommodate the growing segment of visitors to the Tennessee River.

"The number of boats coming to the Tenn-Tom and the Tennessee River from the coastal areas is growing.  Anything this region can do to welcome these visitors and boaters will benefit the economy...that's for sure," said Johnston.

For information about NAMA, contact Russ Cranford, Alred Marina 256-582-4400.

LIFE ON THE WATER Magazine to host Boating 101 for Women and Kids on the Water Mini-Camp at NMMA's Nashville Boat Show January 7-11

Publisher Christy Martin is on a mission.  "If we can make women and kids love boating, the world would be a better place," she commented after agreements were made with National Marine Manufacturer Association executives to conduct the sessions at this year's Nashville show.

Attendance at the Ft. Lauderdale show in October was steady from 2007, possibly even increased.  But boat purchases were off.  The show was held right before the election and during the financial meltdown on Wall Street.

Boat shows still remain the number 1 choice among potential buyers to get educated about boating.

LIFE ON THE WATER Magazine spoke with Thom Dammrich, NMMA President and promoter of 25 boat shows across the country in our segment 'Calming Waters in a Rough Economy' coming in our next newsletter.
